“The Growing Building”: An agricultural Institute made out of regenerative Bio-Materials
Adaptive Habitats: A mixed Use building and Agricultural Institute.
Location: Sector 29, Gurgaon, Haryana
Area: 35,000 Sqm
Year: 2019
Gurugram: The Un-Cultured City.
Haryana, India initially known for its rich farmlands has now lost its cultural significance due to over population and urbanization. As a city grows into more smarter and technology driven system, it faces a crisis in its identity. This, although un-avoidable must be dealt with. The project [UP]Rooted aims at restoring the cultural fabric of the city through an intervention that initiates the dialogue between the people and the complex urban “eco-system”. The building proposes the above mentioned Programmes in order to revive this long lost culture. The new age of technology forces us to explore new techniques of farming which can accommodate the environmental challenges we face today.
The building itself acts as a farm and extracts the essence of it. These panels are grown from soil, substrate, sunlight and water. This moist mixture is placed in a mould of the desired shape and once left alone it grows into the form of the mould. This building material is 100% recyclable, grown and compostable and can be used to create any form whatsoever. Due to the structural and spongy properties the panels make good for construction.
This view illustrates the Botanical Stilt Floor which contains new hydroponic and Aquaponic processes in Agriculture. This double heighted floor provides a relief between the built structure and a new experience within the built.
These biologically engineered material panels give the project a significant expression and distinctive character, as if the building is emerging from the ground. The creative and innovative sustainable solution makes the building carbon neutral. The material facade even acts as an absorbant of CO2 thereby creating a positive impact not only in the construction process but also post occupancy as well as the micro climate of the city.
Community farming -> Buying Organic Products -> Grow your own material -> Take home material and grow your own home.
[UP]Rooted provides a platform for different kinds of beings to engage and interact, developing the idea of Mixed and Socially Sustainable Communities. Ranging from local farmers to residents, the building offers a space to learn the rich culture from one another. The project promotes the co-existence of all life-forms and adapts to their needs as well as the environment. The community farm can be rented out by different people. The opportunity to local farmers and artisans to promote their own produce is provided. Most importantly agriculture is encouraged.
